Cash Bar vs Open Bar: What Couples Should Know Before Their Wedding

What couples in Western Maryland should know before deciding how drinks will be served at their wedding

One of the biggest questions couples run into when planning their reception is what to do about the bar. Should you cover the drinks for everyone? Have guests pay for their own? Or do something in between?

As a wedding planner and bartender in Western Maryland, I’ve seen all kinds of bar setups. And honestly, there’s no one right answer. The best choice usually comes down to your budget, your guest list, and the kind of atmosphere you want for your wedding.

What Is an Open Bar?

An open bar means your guests can order drinks without paying for them themselves. The couple covers the alcohol and bar service for the event.

A lot of couples love this option because it feels easy for guests. Nobody has to worry about bringing cash, opening a tab, or standing there wondering what they can afford to order.

And let’s be honest, it usually helps keep the party going once the dancing starts.

Pros of an Open Bar

  • Guests feel hosted and taken care of
  • No awkward payment moment at the bar
  • It keeps the reception feeling fun and relaxed
  • It’s simple for guests — they can just order and enjoy

Things to Consider With an Open Bar

  • It can quickly become one of the biggest reception expenses
  • The more options you offer, the more the total can climb
  • If you have a crowd that loves to celebrate, the cost can rise fast as the night goes on

That’s why a lot of couples go with a limited open bar instead of a full one. Beer, wine, and one or two signature cocktails can still feel generous without the full cost of offering everything.

What Is a Cash Bar?

A cash bar means guests pay for their own drinks during the reception. Usually the couple is still arranging the bartender and the setup, but the guests are purchasing the alcohol themselves.

This can be a good option for couples trying to stay within a tighter budget, especially if alcohol just isn’t a top priority for them.

Pros of a Cash Bar

  • It lowers your wedding alcohol costs
  • It can help keep drinking a little more moderate
  • It lets you put more of your budget toward other parts of the wedding

Things to Consider With a Cash Bar

  • Some guests may assume drinks are being hosted
  • Your guests need to be prepared with cash or cards
  • Depending on your crowd, it may not feel quite as welcoming or formal

If you do decide on a cash bar, I always think it’s smart to let guests know ahead of time on your wedding website so there are no surprises.

What About a Mix of Both?

This is honestly where a lot of couples land now, and it makes sense. You can still offer something to your guests without taking on the cost of a full open bar all night.

  • Beer and wine hosted, liquor is cash
  • Open bar for cocktail hour only
  • Drink tickets for each guest
  • Signature cocktails hosted, with other drinks cash

This kind of setup gives you a little more flexibility and usually feels like a good middle ground.

It’s one of those choices where you really can have the best of both worlds.

My Honest Bartender Perspective

From actually being behind the bar at weddings, I can say this: the best bar setup is the one that makes sense for you.

Some weddings are big, lively parties where an open bar fits the energy perfectly. Others are more laid-back and do just fine with beer, wine, or a more limited setup. It really depends on the feel of your day and the people you’re inviting.

No matter which route you choose, what matters most is that it’s planned well. When the bar is organized and running smoothly, guests are happy, the flow of the night feels easier, and you don’t end up dealing with unnecessary stress.

And from what I’ve seen, the bar usually ends up being one of the most social spots of the night anyway. People gather there, laugh there, catch up there, and sometimes head straight from there to the dance floor.
