How Much Alcohol Do You Need for a Wedding?

A Simple Wedding Bar Calculator Guide for Beer, Wine & Liquor

One of the biggest questions couples ask when planning their wedding bar is: “How much alcohol do we actually need?”

Buying too little can leave guests disappointed, while buying too much can quickly blow your budget. The good news is that with a little planning, most couples can estimate their wedding alcohol needs surprisingly accurately.

Whether you’re planning a full open bar, beer and wine service, or signature cocktails, this guide will help you estimate how much alcohol you’ll need for your wedding celebration.

The General Wedding Alcohol Rule

Most wedding professionals use a simple rule:

Plan for approximately one drink per guest per hour.

For example:

  • 100 guests × 5-hour reception = approximately 500 drinks
  • 150 guests × 5-hour reception = approximately 750 drinks
  • 200 guests × 5-hour reception = approximately 1,000 drinks

Keep in mind that not every guest will drink alcohol, while others may enjoy more than one drink per hour. This formula usually balances out quite well.

How Much Beer, Wine & Liquor for 100 Guests?

For a typical 5-hour wedding reception with 100 guests, many bartenders recommend:

  • Beer: 120–150 bottles or cans
  • Wine: 20–25 bottles
  • Liquor: 8–10 standard 750ml bottles
  • Champagne toast: 15–20 bottles

These numbers can vary depending on your guests, venue, and whether you’re offering signature cocktails.

How Signature Cocktails Save Money

One of our favorite ways to help couples save money is by offering one or two signature cocktails instead of stocking a full premium bar.

Signature drinks:

  • Reduce the amount of liquor you need to purchase
  • Create a personalized guest experience
  • Speed up bar service
  • Help couples stay within budget

Popular wedding signature cocktails include:

  • Margaritas
  • Old Fashioneds
  • Moscow Mules
  • French 75s
  • Espresso Martinis
  • Palomas

Don’t Forget the Non-Alcoholic Drinks

Every wedding should include plenty of non-alcoholic options. Consider providing:

  • Water stations
  • Soft drinks
  • Lemonade
  • Iced tea
  • Coffee
  • Mocktails

A good rule is to plan for at least one non-alcoholic beverage per guest per hour as well.
